Scapa FlowScapa Flow Photography Trip 4th Jul 2009
£699

The Photography week hosted by Lawson Wood on board the M.V. Sharon Rose will take place in Scapa Flow; quite possibly the best wreck diving location on the planet and certainly the location of more scrap metal on the seabed than anywhere else in the Northern Hemisphere. With that in mind and the increased challenges of taking photographs in relatively poor light and visibility the aim of this week is to maximise the photographic potential in a week’s diving and underwater photography.

Whilst the most dramatic wrecks are the big battleships, quite possibly the best underwater photography locations are on the blockships. The Light Cruisers and debris sites will also be visited as they all yield very good photographic subjects in shallower water. Depths and times can often be limiting, but the skipper of the boat is incredibly experienced and will put us on the best wreck site to suit the expertise of the divers on board and photographic subjects required.

Nitrox is available and must be organised in advance. Minimum qualification is P.A.D.I Advanced Open Water and Drysuit Speciality with a minimum of 50 logged dives. Experience of diving in the U.K is an advantage but not essential as is Wreck Diving speciality.

The trip is leaving on Saturday 4th July flying from Heathrow airport and includes flights, transfers, 7 nights B&B, 6 days diving inc. tanks & weights aboard Sharon Rose.

5th-10th July
Spend these days completing a total of 12 dives at various wreck sites, including the Konig, Kronprinz Wilhelm, Markgraf, SMS Brummer, Koln, Dresden and Karlsrue. Orkney also has some great scenic diving at sites like Stanger Head, Old Man of Hoy and Inganess.

If you do not own your own equipment Diving Leisure will hire you this at a discounted rate for this trip. Please ask in store for more details.

HMS ScyllaHMS Scylla Trip 23rd May 2009
£tbc

In 2003 HMS Scylla was bought by the National Marine Aquarium to be placed on the seabed as a reef.  Even though HMS Scylla is seen as still a very young wreck, the outside walls of the hull are teaming with anemones and sea squirts of a variety of colours (predominantly orange).  Also many of the fish that can be seen on the neighbouring wreck, the James Egan Layne, have taken up residence both in and around the Scylla, including wrasse, pouting, bibs and pollack.

The James Eagan Layne an American liberty ship located in Whitsand Bay in 21 metres is one of our most popular dives. At 10000 Tons this considerable wreck is home to a multitude of marine life, can easily be penetrated without danger or special training, and stands within 8 metres from the surface at the Bow. Inside you can swim through the engine room past the engines and boilers, through the cargo holds and into various other areas of the ship. Sunk in 1945 by a Torpedo from U1195 on 21st March 1945, the torpedo piercing the 4th & 5th holds on the starboard vessel's side. Her cargo consisted of tank parts, jeeps, lorries, wagon wheels and various other smaller items.

CapernwrayCapernwray Day Trip 21st Feb 2009
Entrance Fee Only

Capernwray is ideal at this time of the year.  It is generally rather quiet at the inland sites during the cooler months of the year. If you have not been to Capernwray before there is more to this quarry than you would believe at first glance, with wrecks, some vertical slate walls and a host of fish from perch to sturgeon. This is the ideal place to dust off that dive gear that has been in the cupboard since last summer!

There are a number of options.  Our preferred method is that all DLC members meet at Diving Leisure in Leeds, then car share to the dive site. This saves on fuel for all divers, reduces our carbon footprint and allows the entire diving day to become more of an event.

Trefor PierTrefor Pier Day Trip - August 2009
Shore Based Diving

Come and join us for a days shore diving at the spectacular dive site of Trefor Pier in Wales. With a maximum depth of 7m this day will be enjoyeable for new divers through to more experienced divers.

Introduction
This really is a lovely dive, even though the surface area is relatively small, there is lots to see and it's not hard to spend a hour here, just meandering under the pier. We have dived this area a few times now and generally it has been excellent. Maximum depth is about 7m.

Safety
There are times however when the vis can be worse depending on weather conditions and you do have to watch the currents if you venture outside of the pier. There are usually a few fishermen on the end of the pier so you have to be careful of the lines.

Services
Plenty of  parking and some shops. If the weathers against you it is only about 10 minutes from Dorothea quarry.

The pier is at the end of this wall, to get to it you will have to swim (surface of otherwise) along this wall. There's lots to see and if you fancy venturing out tie a reel to one of the end pier supports and reel out to the reefs.

How to get there
    * Get onto the A487 southwards from Caernarfon.
    * A few miles further on at Llanwnda take the A449 towards Aberdesach.
    * Follow the road through Aberdesach and through Gyrn Goch.
    * Then look out for the signs for Trefor and head for Beach Road and the sea front.

There are a number of options of getting to Trefor Pier.  Our preferred method is that all DLC members meet at Diving Leisure in Leeds, then car share to the dive site. This saves on fuel for all divers, reduces our carbon footprint and allows the entire diving day to become more of an event.

Diving Trips & Holidays within the UK

Ok, so Leeds isn't exactly on the coast. But that doesn't stop us taking advantage of what UK diving has to offer us up north! We try very deliberately to make our local diving local enough that it's affordable and practical from Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield, Harrogate, York and the surrounding areas... but don't worry, it won't be in the Aire! If there are dive locations you would like to visit or wreck diving you would like to do that is not on the list, then email us and we will do our best to arrange something.
